The Red & Black — Athenians looking to volunteer in their community or just hang out with some fluffy friends can take a dog out to play for a day with the Doggy Day Out program offered at the Athens Area Humane Society.

Doggy Day Out is a unique program where interested applicants can volunteer to take a dog out for a few hours and engage in activities of their choice, from getting a pup cup to watching a movie to taking the dog for a drive. The program also gives dogs at the shelter an opportunity to take a break to “just be a dog,” according to the AAHS website.

“It’s really beneficial to the dogs because they get so used to being in the shelter that they forget how to be a dog, really,” Hannah Ford, volunteer and community engagement manager at AAHS, said. “It just gives them a chance to go out, enjoy life and fresh air.” […]
