The Red & Black — Now celebrating their 125th anniversary, the Athens Area Humane Society is offering 50% off all adult pet adoptions on cats and dogs from Monday, Nov. 18 to Friday, Nov. 22 at their animal care center at 1030 Mitchell Bridge Road.
Founded by socialite Louise DuBose and several prominent Athens citizens, The Athens Humane Society initially aimed to safeguard carriage horses from mistreatment and excessive labor by their owners. Their mission has since expanded to include protecting dogs and other pets by promoting animal welfare legislation.
“The Humane Society has endured because we have singularly focused on saving and improving the lives of animals from its inception,” Athens Area Humane Society CEO Cheryl McCormick said in a press release. “We could not have lasted without the compassionate support of our caring community. Few Athenians realize that the Humane Society is the oldest non-faith-based charity in Athens.” […]
