We work hard every day to help make the stay for the animals in our care as comfortable as possible until they find their forever home. We are very proud of how clean our shelter is and the great care we are able to provide for the animals. We recently found out that there was one thing we could do for the animals that we weren't doing- give them more space.
According to recent research by UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, one of the top-ranked veterinary schools in the nation by US News World Report, cats need 10 square feet of space in order to prevent excessive stress levels. As you probably know, stress can be very harmful to your emotional and physical well-being. The same goes for animals.
We are in the process of converting our cages into double-sided cages. There will be a hole cut between adjoining cages giving the cats access to two cages. Some may think this will limit the number of cats we will be taking in, but in actuality, the cats will be happier and less likely to get sick, meaning they will get adopted faster, be housed for shorter periods of time, and we can then help even more animals.
   Double-sided cages provide many benefits:
- Improve housing quality by allowing seperate area for eating and using the bathroom
- Make cleaning more efficient because cats can simply be moved from one part of the cage while the other part is cleaned, and vice versa
- Reduce the risk of disease transmission because staff will not have to handle cats during cleaning
